Gynecologic oncology is a medical subspecialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva. If you have a gynecological cancer, having a gynecological oncologist on your team is essential; research has demonstrated improved outcomes for patients who have a gynecologic oncologist involved in the care of their gynecologic cancer.

As with many types of cancer, treatment for gynecological cancers often involves multiple modalities, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy. Through our collaboration with UCSF Health, women in Marin who need gynecologic oncology surgery can be treated at the UCSF Gynecological Surgery Oncology Clinic in Marin. This joint project allows us to offer women access to UCSF’s expert gynecological oncology program, close to home. Our team provides new patient consultations, diagnostic pelvic exams, referrals for diagnostic imaging and biopsies as indicated, advice on the latest therapies available, clinical trial opportunities, standard treatments, education, and genetic counseling for high-risk patients.

Surgery with the ultra-precise da Vinci® Surgical System

Minimally invasive surgery has ushered in a new era in the treatment of gynecological conditions. In addition to many laparoscopic procedures, Marin General Hospital also offers robotic-assisted surgery, a technique that has proven especially useful in the treatment of gynecological cancers. Advantages include:

  • Less pain
  • Fewer complications
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Faster recovery

While robotic surgery has proven to be a marvelous surgical tool, successful outcomes ultimately depend on the surgeon’s skill and experience. Our team works with UCSF’s Dr. Jocelyn Chapman, a surgical and medical expert in gynecologic cancers. Dr. Chapman has special training in both laparoscopic and robotic gynecological surgery. Her expertise also includes using genomics in the analysis and treatment of gynecologic cancers.
