MarinHealth Launches New Women's Heart Health Program

Program will offer preventive strategies, screening, and innovative treatment geared toward needs of women at risk of heart disease

MarinHealth today announced the launch of a new Women’s Heart Health Program offering preventive strategies, screening, and innovative treatment protocols, including multidisciplinary care coordination, education, nutrition coaching, and cardiac rehabilitation—all geared toward the specific needs of women who are at risk of heart disease.

Heart disease is the leading killer of U.S. women, surpassing all cancers combined. This translates to one in three female deaths, or approximately one woman every minute. There are several reasons for these disheartening statistics. Women’s heart attack symptoms are often more subtle, and women may not even realize they are having a heart attack.

The Women’s Heart Health Program at MarinHealth will treat patients with coronary artery disease—the most common type of heart condition, which affects blood flow to the heart and can cause a heart attack—as well as additional conditions, including arrhythmia, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, valve disease, congenital heart disease, heart failure, peripheral artery disease, structural and valvular disease, and vascular disease.

New patients of the Women's Heart Health Program will be screened to pinpoint their risk factors for heart disease. Their personalized assessment—along with each patient’s medical history and a complete cardiac exam—becomes the basis for heart disease prevention and a personalized treatment plan specific to each patient.

“The program uses a multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach to cardiac care. The mission of the clinic is to increase awareness of cardiovascular risk factors in women and specifically focus on treatment pathways for cardiovascular conditions that present differently in women,” said MarinHealth cardiologist Ines Sherifi, MD, MSc, leader of the Women’s Heart Health Program.

“Additionally, we will coordinate patient care with physician specialists, a dietician, and an exercise physiologist who specializes in cardiac rehabilitation. Our experts will help patients navigate and schedule any follow-up appointments close to home to ensure patients are accessing the right care with the right specialist.”

"The Women's Heart Health program is an important addition to MarinHealth’s nationally-ranked cardiology program, offering the highest level of expert care specifically tailored to the unique needs of women," said David Klein, MD, CEO, Marin Health. "We are thrilled to be the first in the North Bay to offer this type of program.”

The MarinHealth Women’s Heart Health Program is made possible in part through the generosity of the Haynes family. Their dedication and generosity have enhanced the leading-edge cardiovascular care available at MarinHealth’s Haynes Cardiovascular Institute.

Patients who may be at risk of heart disease can be referred to the Women’s Heart Program by their primary or specialty care providers and can also self-refer by calling 1-628-336-5395.
