Healthgrades names Marin General Hospital in top 10% for stroke care nationally

Marin General is the only North Bay Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Stroke™ for 5 consecutive years and only Bay Area Five-Star Recipient for Prostate Removal Surgery™ for three consecutive years

GREENBRAE, CA – Marin General Hospital announced today that it has received the prestigious 2017 Stroke Care Excellence Award™ for the fourth consecutive year (2014-2017) from Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions in order to find the right doctor and the right hospital for the right care. This achievement places Marin General Hospital among the top 10% of hospitals in the country for stroke care. Marin General Hospital is also the only hospital in the North Bay1 to be named a Five-Star Recipient in the Treatment of Stroke™ by Healthgrades for the fifth consecutive year (2013-2017).

Additional honors Marin General Hospital received from Healthgrades recognizing their excellence in medical care were awarded in the areas of Cardiac, Critical Care, Gastrointestinal, Neurosciences, Prostate Surgery, and Pulmonary. In fact, Marin General Hospital is the only Bay Area2 Five-Star Recipient for Prostate Removal Surgery™ for three consecutive years (2015-2017).

“It is an absolute honor to receive these accolades from Healthgrades and to be recognized as one of the top hospitals in the nation for the treatment of stroke care,” said Marin General Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Lee Domanico. “We continually strive to provide best-in-class quality and clinical excellence for our patients. I am extremely proud of our outstanding team of clinicians and staff who are deeply committed to delivering high-quality care to the Marin community and its residents day in and day out.”

As demonstrated by Healthgrades, a disparity in the level of health care can have a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2013-2015, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving “5-stars” as a group, on average, 223,412 lives could potentially have been saved and 162,215 complications could potentially have been avoided.* A 5-star rating indicates that a hospital’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

Additionally, from 2013-2015, patients treated for stroke in hospitals receiving the Stroke Care Excellence Award have, on average, a 32.9% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

“Consumers have many choices regarding where to receive their healthcare, which is why it’s so vital that they understand outcomes performance at specific hospitals for specific conditions and procedures,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “Those hospitals that have achieved a specialty excellence distinction in Stroke Care from Healthgrades exemplify a commitment to exceptional quality of patient care.”

Analysis and Criteria

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures, as well as an evaluation of comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 18 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
