Multi-Disciplinary Surgeons
The more medical science evolves, the greater the need for specialties and subspecialties. Surgeons are required to have a greater knowledge base and master an increasing number of procedures, many of which are highly sophisticated and complex. As a result, many surgeons pursue additional education in a particular specialty are proud to have experts in every surgical specialty except organ transplant at MarinHealth Medical Center.
General Surgery
The term “General Surgeon” is somewhat misleading because general surgery is, in fact, a specialty.
A General Surgeon has specialized knowledge and experience in nine primary components of surgery, including:
- Alimentary Tract
- Abdomen and Digestive System
- Breast, Skin, and Soft Tissue
- Endocrine System
- Surgical Critical Care
- Surgical Oncology
- Trauma (including musculoskeletal, hand, and head injuries)
- Emergency Surgeries (such as appendectomy or splenectomy)
- Cancer Surgeries
Surgeons who wish to specialize must still spend part of their residency in general surgery. Some complete a general surgery residency followed by a fellowship in a specific type of surgery. Or, they may obtain a residency in the specialty that appeals to them which will include a year or more of general surgery in addition to the specialty. The length of a residency or fellowship for surgical specialties varies depending on the area of focus.
