We strongly encourage all patients either considering or already scheduled for joint replacement therapy to take our complimentary Joint Program. Taught by our Orthopedic Program Coordinator, with the participation of a physical therapist and an occupational therapist, the class covers hip and knee joint replacements, step-by-step, with visual aids including a slide show, anatomical models, and actual hip and knee implants. A physical therapist teaches exercises to assist recovery and an occupational therapist demonstrates the use of assistive devices to facilitate daily living during recovery.

Topics covered include:

  • Anatomy
  • Anesthesia
  • Surgery
  • What to expect during your hospital stay
  • Pain management
  • Blood clot prevention
  • Prevention of infection
  • Foot pumps (a device to increase circulation and help prevent deep vein thrombosis)
  • Incentive spirometer (a device to help keep your lungs clear while you are healing)
  • Prevention of blood infusion
  • Preparing for postoperative home care

Attendees are given an informational booklet about our Joint Camp program that helps to guide you through the surgical recovery process, information holders and contact numbers to call if they need more information. We have found that patients who attend this class are less anxious about their procedure and recover at a faster pace.
