Anyone who’s been to the Emergency Room knows it can be a scary, anxiety-filled experience – so it’s not difficult to imagine how much more terrifying it can be for a child. That’s why we have introduced an “ouchless” approach in our Emergency Department.
As an “Ouchless” ED, Marin General Hospital’s Emergency Team incorporates child-friendly protocols that help take the anxiety and pain out of visits. Emergency staff and physicians have been trained extensively in distraction and sensitivity techniques for use with their pediatric patients. Some injections are needle-free and shot blockers reduce the pain of shots. Plus, interactive and educational toys are used during the visit – such as dolls to demonstrate procedures or breathing treatment masks with animal faces to add playfulness and encourage patient compliance. Click here to listen as Michelle Tracy, RN, Director of Emergency & Trauma Services at Marin General Hospital, discusses Ouchless ED and how the new emergency department at MGH provides a better Ouchless experience for children and their families!
What’s more, our Emergency Department recently renovated three treatment rooms dedicated to pediatric patients. In early 2017, we will be bringing on a child-life specialist who will work closely with children and their families. Marin County families can rest assured that if their child has to take a trip to the emergency room, Marin General Hospital is equipped with the latest in pediatric care.
We also offer a dedicated 14-bed pediatric unit if your child needs extended care.
