Family Birth Center
Most Marin women of childbearing age are probably aware that Marin General Hospital has the county’s ONLY Labor and Delivery Services. In fact, more than 60,000 babies have been born here at our Family Birth Center since 1952. But unless you’ve had a baby with us recently, you may not know about all the big changes at our Family Birth Center.
We have partnered with local obstetricians and midwives to ensure all patients have the opportunity to choose the kind of labor and delivery care they want, with around-the-clock support services such as anesthesia, pediatrics, specialized nursing care, and advanced perinatology. At our Family Birth Center, our goal is to offer every woman a birth experience that’s in line with her individual, cultural, and philosophical preferences. Improvements at our Family Birth Center include the following:
- 24/7 midwifery care for women who prefer that their delivery be assisted by a Certified Nurse Midwife
- The purchase of an AquaEez® laboring tub for women who want to labor in soothing warm water
- A special partnership with UCSF for high-risk pregnancies
- Availability of high-quality maternity care for uninsured and underinsured women

Our Family Birth Center is as nurturing and patient-focused as it is sophisticated and well-equipped. Medically, our record is excellent, as evidenced by these important markers:
- Low cesarean section rate
- High rate of successful vaginal births after a cesarean (VBAC)
- High breastfeeding rate
Our most important concern is the health of the mother and child. The majority of deliveries are routine, but in the event of a complication, it’s reassuring to know that we are a full-service hospital with obstetricians, pediatricians, and anesthesiologists in-house 24/7 and a level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Patient and Family-Centered Care
Childbirth is a profound, deeply personal event. We do all we can to follow your birth plan as closely as possible while keeping the labor and delivery comfortable, smooth, and safe. Our focus on patient-centered care takes into account the beliefs, needs, and cultural requirements of the mother and her family.
Understanding that women have different philosophies and desires around the childbirth experience, we recognize the value in providing access to maternity care providers who have varying backgrounds, training, and experience. That’s why we made access to a Certified Nurse Midwife a priority. We are the only hospital in Marin and San Francisco with Certified Nurse Midwives available around the clock to provide labor and delivery care.
We also encourage spouse or partner participation before, during, and after birth. To help families adjust to the new arrival, we also offer a rich array of classes for moms-to-be, new moms and dads. Get more details and scheduling information.
Caring, Experienced Staff
A multidisciplinary team of doctors and nurses works together in our family-centered birth unit to provide safe and individualized care. Our nursing team is comprised of dedicated obstetric and neonatal nurses, specially trained in support of both natural childbirth and high-risk deliveries. An OB hospitalist (a hospital-based physician who specializes in delivering babies) and a Certified Nurse Midwife are available around the clock. Anesthesiologists and pediatricians are also available 24/7.
