Confidence: All the Elements of Quality, Personalized Care

In order for you and your baby to receive the highest level of care, we have forged some essential relationships:

Obstetricians & Midwives

We work with expert local OB/GYNs to ensure all patients have the opportunity to choose the kind of labor and delivery care they want, including vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), physician-assisted birth, and Midwife-assisted birth backed by physician expertise. Midwives are available through the Prima Medical Foundation. Midwife-assisted deliveries at the Family Birth Center are backed by physician expertise when needed. In order to ensure that you have the type of delivery you want, our OB/GYNs and Prima midwives are available 24/7.

UCSF Perinatologists and Neonatologists

High-risk pregnancies are stressful enough without having to leave Marin for treatment. That’s why we have UCSF experts onsite to help bring high-risk pregnancies to term and care for newborns with health issues. In addition, pregnant women with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes can get special advice and supervision from our team at the Braden Diabetes Center.

Support Team

There’s no telling when labor will begin, so our support services, including anesthesia, pediatrics, specialized nursing care, and advanced perinatology, are available around-the-clock. We always have an OR and surgical team ready for emergency cesareans. Our nursing team is comprised of dedicated obstetric and neonatal nurses, specially trained in support of both natural childbirth and high-risk deliveries. Anesthesiologists and pediatricians are available 24/7.

Protecting the Safety of Mother and Child

Our most important concern is the health of the mother and child. Our outcomes are excellent, as evidenced by these important markers:

  • Low cesarean section rate. A cesarean can be life saving for mother, baby, or both. However, it is also open abdominal surgery. We only perform cesareans, whether planned or unplanned, when medically necessary.
  • High rate of successful vaginal births after a cesarean (VBAC).
  • High breastfeeding initiation rate.

We are a proud member of the California Maternity Quality Care Collaborative, devoted to eliminating preventable maternal death and injury and promoting equitable maternity care in California, including those who are uninsured or underinsured.

The Baby-Friendly Initiative

Marin General Hospital is a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility. Sponsored by the United Nations International Children’s Fund and the World Health Organization, this initiative recognizes hospitals and birth centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding. We are one of only 414 US hospitals and birth centers (out of over 6000) to hold Baby-Friendly status.

Ready For Any Emergency

The majority of deliveries are routine, but in the event of a complication, we have all the elements in place to provide you and your baby with the necessary medical attention:

  • We are a full-service hospital with obstetricians, pediatricians, and anesthesiologists in-house, 24/7.
  • A dedicated operating room and surgical team are always available to perform unplanned cesareans and other emergency surgeries.
  • For women who choose a mid-wife assisted birth, we have clear protocols for when and how the doctor steps in.
  • A Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to care for premature or ill newborns with onsite UCSF perinatologists (experts in high-risk pregnancies) and neonatologists (experts in the treatment of sick newborns).
  • Special expertise in gestational diabetes through the Braden Diabetes Center.
