here are many volunteering opportunities available to you here at Marin General Hospital. Please let our volunteer coordinator know if you have special skills (clerical work, retail sales, computers, etc). Volunteers may be assigned to one of the following areas:

BabyNook Store

  • Retail sales, utilizing cash register and credit card terminal
  • Inventory, stock, and price merchandise and gifts

Behavioral Health (Psychiatric Unit)

  • Assist Behavioral Health nurses to help provide a stress-free environment
  • Provide recreational activities for patients and assist with simple tasks
  • Answer telephones, perform clerical duties and errands

Book Cart

  • Circulate magazine cart, offering free reading materials, to patient’s rooms 
  • Replenish and straighten current magazines in all waiting areas in the hospital

Cancer Institute

  • Group facilitators (through Center for Attitudinal Healing)

Cardiac Specialty Unit (CSU)

  • Promote patient satisfaction, safety, and education
  • Stock patient rooms, run errands
  • Answer call lights, assist patients
  • Perform additional duties, including clerical, that support the care of patients

Courtesy Visitor

  • The Patient Liaison Program functions as a resource and referral for patient needs and inquiries, which includes daily visits to patients to evaluate their hospital stay

Docent

Emergency Department

  • Part of the patient care team which includes stocking patient treatment rooms, providing warm blankets and telephones to patients, running errands, accompanying patients to x-ray, etc.
  • Provide information and refreshments to families in waiting room

Family Information

  • Liaison between surgical staff and families/friends of patients in surgery
  • Provide refreshments, newspapers, and conversation to waiting family members and friends

Floor Duty/Supervisors

  • Assist in the Volunteer Office: answer phones, disseminate information, schedule tours, accept flowers for patients, computer work, photocopying
  • Run errands: patient mail and e-mail, flowers, newspapers, video program, disseminate magazines, etc.
  • Perform tasks for other departments: compiling mailings and packets, filing, projects, and general clerical assignments

Front Desk Reception (West Lobby)

  • Greet and direct visitors and patients
  • Provide escort service
  • Provide concierge services to visitors

Gift Gallery

  • Retail sales, utilizing cash register and credit card terminal
  • Stock and price merchandise, do inventory

Hospitality Cart

  • Set up coffee cart with supplies
  • Take cart to patient floors and offer coffee, cookies, and newspapers each morning

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

  • Promote patient satisfaction, safety, and education
  • Stock patient rooms with supplies needed by staff, for the care of patients
  • Perform additional duties, including clerical duties and running errands that support the care of patients

Medical Unit

  • Answer phones at nurse's station
  • Stock patient rooms
  • Answer call lights and assist patients with requests
  • Run errands
  • Assist nursing staff and clerks, as needed

Nutrition Services

  • Tray assessments and other clinical/food service quality improvement projects
  • Patient and customer satisfaction initiatives
  • Clerical and computer tasks, administrative support

Radiology/Imaging Department

  • Greet patients and help prepare them for exams
  • Answer phones, as directed
  • Restock supplies, fill blanket warmer, wipe down tables and gurneys, etc.
  • Liaison with patient, family, and staff

Surgery Center (Same Day Surgery)

  • Provide directions, information, and refreshments to patient’s families and friends
  • Assist preoperative patients and staff
  • Assist postoperative patients and nursing staff in recovery room

Surgical Unit

  • Answers phones at nurse's station and assist unit clerk
  • Answer call lights, assist patients
  • Stock patient rooms, run errands
