The Leapfrog Group
The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit hospital watchdog organization, announced that Marin General Hospital has been recognized as one of the Top Hospitals in the nation - an elite national distinction given to the top 3% of hospitals with the highest quality in the nation. Performance across significant areas of hospital care, including safety, surgical outcomes, maternity care, and leadership, is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award. Data is gathered and publicly reported through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The Leapfrog Hospital Survey compares hospitals’ performance on national standards of patient safety, quality, efficiency and management structures that prevent errors, providing the most comprehensive picture of how patients fare at individual institutions.

"A" Grade for Hospital Safety (Fall 2016)

Marin General Hospital announced it was ranked as one of the safest hospitals in the United States by national non-profit hospital watchdog The Leapfrog Group. According to new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades released Tuesday, October 31, Marin General Hospital was among only 844 hospitals out of 2600 evaluated to receive an “A” ranking for safety, which notes how well the hospital protects its patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

Marin General Hospital received re-certification in 2014 from the Joint Commission for its stroke program and received the 2016 American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for the six year in a row. Both programs are voluntary processes intended to elevate the standard of care for stroke programs and instill confidence in the community served.

To receive the Get With The Guidelines award, a hospital must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures. These measures include aggressive use of medications that have been shown to improve patient outcomes, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation. All are aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.
 

 

3-Year Echocardiography Accreditation (2015-2018)
Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC)
Marin General Hospital has been granted three-year accreditation in Echocardiography in the areas of Adult Transesophageal, Adult Transthoracic and Adult Stress by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). This accreditation signifies that Marin General Hospital has undergone a thorough review of operational and technical components by a panel of experts. The IAC grants accreditation to facilities that provide quality patient care and are in compliance with national Echocardiography standards. IAC accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indication that Marin General Hospital has been carefully critiqued on all aspects of operations considered relevant by medical experts in the field of Echocardiography.
 

 

3-Year Accreditation with Commendation (2014-2017) 
Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS)
For the third time in a row, the Cancer Institute at Marin General Hospital received an Accreditation with Commendation, the highest level of recognition from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer (CoC). In exceeding all seven standards of care considered for special commendation, MCI has earned Gold level designation and the CoC's Outstanding Achievement award. Top Performer on Key Quality Measures (2015)
The Joint Commission
The Joint Commission’s Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® program recognizes accredited hospitals that attain excellence on accountability measure performance. The program is based on data reported in the previous year about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to be the best treatments for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, inpatient psychiatric services, stroke, venous thromboembolism, immunization, and perinatal care.
 

Gold Seal of Approval™ (2013-2016)
The Joint Commission

Marin General Hospital has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for both its hospital and its Behavioral Health Services. This three-year accreditation is a nationally recognized designation of the hospital’s compliance with the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards for quality and safety. To earn the designation, Marin General Hospital and its Behavioral Health Services unit underwent rigorous and unannounced on-site surveys. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated their compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients.
 

Chest Pain Center Accreditation (2017-2020)
The Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) is an international, nonprofit organization that focuses on transforming cardiovascular care by assisting facilities in their efforts to create cardiovascular centers of excellence that deliver quality care and patient satisfaction in a cost sensitive environment. As the accreditation services arm of the American College of Cardiology, SCPC offers individual hospitals and hospital systems the support needed to effectively reduce variations of care and bridge existing gaps in treatment. Through its collaboration with actively engaged, multidisciplinary teams, SCPC is Taking Science to the Bedside™ and improving outcomes in the management of heart disease.

Across 42 specialties (including primary care), more than 250 physicians practicing at Marin General Hospital have been named to the prestigious [415] Top Doctors 2015 by Marin Magazine. The list was compiled through peer-to-peer polling of more than 4,000 doctors in San Francisco and Marin counties, who were asked to select the physicians they considered the best of the best. Every doctor in the area was both a candidate and a voter (they were not allowed to vote for themselves, nor were they permitted to vote more than once for any given doctor.) Our Breast Health Center has outstanding early detection rates and is one of a few Bay Area Breast Health Centers to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The NAPBC is a consortium of national, professional organizations focused on breast health and dedicated to the improvement of quality care and outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast through evidence-based standards and patient and professional education.

Blue Shield of California has designated Marin General Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center in the fields of Spine Surgery as well as Knee and Hip Replacement. The Blue Distinction Center designation signifies that Marin General Hospital has met objective clinical measures developed by expert physicians and medical organizations as well as meeting nationally established quality care and outcomes criteria. This designation verifies that Marin General Hospital demonstrates expertise in delivering quality specialty care, places an emphasis on patient health and safety, and provides better overall outcomes for both spine surgery and knee and hip replacement.

Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (2014-2017)
American College of Radiology

Marin General Hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR award recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. Recognized centers have undergone peer-review evaluations every three years to confirm that they adhere to high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, and quality control and assurance procedures. To maintain their designation, facilities must undergo an on-site review every three years.
 

 

Accreditation for Continuing Medical Education (2016-2020)
California Medical Association Institute for Medical Quality

The California Medical Association, Institute for Medical Quality has awarded a Four Year CME Accreditation to Marin General Hospital for the period March 1, 2016 thru February 1, 2020. Physicians who attend CME courses offered by IMQ/CMA-accredited providers meet the Medical Board of California’s Division of Licensure requirements for physician licensure and the California Medical Association’s Certification in Continuing Medical Education.
