Marin General Hospital's newly-remodeled Family Birth Center opened in December 1997, offering expecting mothers and families the same birthing care they have received at Marin General with many of the comforts of home.

The experienced staff at Marin General has assisted with more than 56,000 births since the hospital opened in 1952. In 1996, as one of the final elements in the hospital's 10-year modernization program, the hospital began renovating the birthing unit and raising funds for construction.

The 9,600-square-foot Family Birth Center is decorated in soft pastels, new furnishings and original works of art. The rooms feature rocking chairs, private baths with showers, and air conditioning.

The campaign, conducted by the Marin General Health Foundation, raised $1.1 million toward $1.6 million for construction, state-of-the-art equipment and furnishings. The fund raising campaign was chaired by San Rafael resident Susannah Clark and Marin obstetrician Gerald Wilner, MD.

Key donations were received from Marin General's OB physicians and nursing staff, both of which have rooms named in their honor. Marin resident Neils Schultz made a generous $100,000 donation to the new unit.
